Fretography®

Guitarpixel®

- Fretography and Guitarpixel are now both registered trade marks!
- Announcing New Fretography Blog!

(Warning!! Sales spiel below!)

I'm happy to announce that I've been granted two trademarks by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Fretography® is a way of mapping the fretboard based on widely accepted principles of music theory. While there are plenty of sources for fretboard diagrams available, Fretography goes beyond most methods by comprehensively mapping the diatonic system as a whole. The essential fingering patterns are seen as geometric zones which are named for their diatonic significance. The study of chords, scales, modes and more is enhanced by mapping them in in a contextually related way - not as isolated patterns.

Also - - - Check out the new Fretography Blog. Each entry features a tutorial focusing on a specific aspect of the fret-mapping system.

NPR's Car Talk Features 'Old Bel'

A song I wrote back in 1983, Old Bel, was aired on National Public Radio's 'Car Talk' on April 23rd (program #200517)

The song is an affectionate ode to my beat-up old '69 Plymouth Belvedere, my first car. An Mp3 file and the song lyrics are accessible from the Sounds page of this site.

Jim Eaves - January 28th 1944 - December 4th 2003

A great musician passed away on December 4th 2003. Jim Eaves was one of my mentors. I first met Jim when we were both playing at the Dugout on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village in 1976.

Amazed by his skill and style on the guitar I was eager to learn as much from him as I could, and he willingly obliged. Jim was always a generous man. Always there to talk about music - and anything else - with an 18 year old just getting started in life. He will be missed.

Idle Thoughts
The old truck tells me
I need repair this cold day -
Ignitor broken.
In the background is my beloved '84 Nissan King Cab pickup truck.... ...to which I am deeply in debt.
